Raku FiredRaku is a Japanese firing process and philosophy. New techniques have been developed recently and we have been exploring the firing methods, glazes, and forms which make a successful Raku pot. Irridescent metallics and crakle are two characteristic treatments. Raku involves gas firing rapidly, removing glowing pots from the kiln, and placing them into a reduction chamber with combustibles which ignite. This chamber is then covered so that the smoke merges with unglazed areas of the vessel, turning it black. |
